How to Play Alphaguess
Alphaguess is an alphabetical word guessing game that tests your vocabulary and logic skills.
Game Rules
- The Goal: Find the secret word hidden in the dictionary by making strategic guesses
- How It Works: Enter any valid English word. The game tells you if the secret word comes before or after your guess alphabetically
- Visual Feedback:
- Words move UP if the secret word is alphabetically after your guess
- Words move DOWN if the secret word is alphabetically before your guess
- Use the feedback to maintain a tight range
- Attempts: Keep guessing until you find the word (rules may vary by version)
Pro Tip: Use a binary search strategy! Start with words from the middle of the alphabet (like MOOSE or NIGHT), then keep splitting the remaining range in half with each guess.
Winning Strategy for Alphaguess
Start Strong
Begin with common words from different parts of the alphabet to quickly narrow the range. Alphaguess answers are not limited to 5 letters, so use the Word Length filter only if your game indicates a specific length.
- Early alphabet: BEACH, CABIN, DRAFT
- Middle alphabet: MELON, NORTH, OLIVE
- Late alphabet: QUEST, ROYAL, SWEET
Binary Search Method
Once you have a range, always guess words that split it roughly in half. For example:
- If your range is APPLE to ZEBRA, try MOOSE
- If your range is BEACH to CRAFT, try CORAL
- If your range is MELON to PEACH, try NORTH
Advanced Tips
- Letter position matters: BEACH comes before BENCH, even though they share letters
- Common vs. obscure: Alphaguess typically uses common English words, not obscure terms
- Use the percentage: When you see 12%, you know you're close to the lower boundary
- Final guesses: In the last few tries, think of word variations (plural, past tense) within your narrow range

Alphaguess FAQ
How does Alphaguess work?
Alphaguess is an alphabetical word guessing game. You guess words, and the game tells you if the secret word comes before or after your guess in dictionary order. Each guess helps narrow the range until you find the hidden word.
What do the indicators mean?
When you guess a word, it moves up or down. Up means the secret word is alphabetically after your guess. Down means it's before your guess. An orange dot shows which direction is closer, and the percentage tells you how close you are.
How many guesses do I get?
You have 14 turns to find the secret word. Your score depends on how many tries you use: perfect 5/5 within 5 tries, then one point deducted for every three additional turns.
What strategy works best?
Start with words from different parts of the alphabet to narrow the range quickly. Then switch to strategic guesses that split the remaining alphabetical range in half. If you don't know the length, leave the Word Length filter on All lengths.
